Surrey Natural Areas Program  (SNAP)

Sunnyside Acres is one of Surrey's natural areas that we are fortunate to have in our community.  The close proximity between town and forest presents conflicts between urban users (cyclists, dog-walkers) and rural values (conservation, ecosystem preservation).  Twenty years ago Surrey took a big step in helping to deal with these conflicts through education by establishing a summer work program for students. They get paid from May to August and get practical experience to enhance their environmental courses at college and university.  Their very presence, repairing trails and closing illegal ones, talking to errant cyclists and dog owners, organizing displays for Open House, give the Forest an injection of knowledgeable, youthful energy.  Many who were part of the program found employment in Parks departments across the Lower Mainland.  We are fortunate to have some in key positions in Surrey.  We welcome them, we speak the same language.
